Scrabs

This is the third of several breedables created by luc Walmer:

The Scrab looks like a cross between a crab and scarab and makes a cricket-like noise that's not overly loud. They move in a sideways fashion adding to the crab theme.

Like all of these breedables from luc, they reach maturity at 7 days of age. At that time they will randomly "mate" and 3 days later you get an "egg". My 0 Gen Scrabs are basic, red and blue, green, blue, red, etc and the first set of eggs I got from them were a lovely teal color and two dark yellow. I hatched out the teal and one of the yellows to give me 1st Gen Scrabs and add their colors into the mix.

Like the other RBG breedables, there is no way to "mate" or "pair" a specific male or female unless you are set up to move 2 far enough away that only they mate. This will require additional food out as well as another home object.  While neither would be considered primmy, they are extra prims to have out if you are limited already.

I do find the food goes faster than I'd like, but the cost is reasonable.  A list of prices is as follows:

Scrab starter pack (medium) L$ 300 (5 eggs, 2 medium food, home device)
Scrab starter pack (full) L$ 500 (9 eggs, 2 large food, home device)
Scrab food monney (medium) L$ 100 (3 Food Monney - 84 servings each)
Scrab food monney (large) L$ 200 (3 Food Monney - 168 servings each)

These items are available in the affiliate vendor.

From the notecard with the starter pack:

About the Scrab
----------------------------------------------------------

To hatch your eggs, simply place them on the ground within range of an Scrab home, then click the egg cup and select "unpackage". Once the egg is unpackaged, click the egg and select "Hatch" this will rez your Scrab, and you can now sit back and watch it .

You should also have some food out, although he won't be hungry until 4 hours after he is born.

About the Scrab home
----------------------------------------------------------

The Home gem is what Scrabs use to judge how far they are allowed to roam from. To configure the distance, change the description of the home gem . The home planet is modifiable, but it is not recommended to change it's size greater than 1-2 meters in height (Scrabs can't fly.)

Clicking the scrab home will update all Scrabs in range with a new home position. You need to click the Scrab home everytime you hatch an egg or unbox an Scrab.

The Scrab home covers a square area of land, allowing for traditional cages, the distance is calculated by using a maximum y and maximum x coordinate, this means that when a scrab is in the corner of its roam distance, it will be further than the allowed distance from the scrab home .

An easy way to determine what your home distance should be, is to rez a large square covering the area you want, then divide the width by 2. So a 10x10 meter pen would require a distance of 5 in the home object. The home object should be placed in the center (on the ground).

 -------------------------------------------
 IMPORTANT :

Scrabs reach maturity at age 7, when they will start mating and producing eggs. In order to breed new Scrabs, you will require an adult male and an adult female, males will be ready to mate every 3 hours, and once a female is pregnant she will be ready to lay her seed after 3 days.

Live Scrabs and eggss must never be taken into your inventory. Doing so will break them, so in order to take them into your inventory, you should use Scrab box for Scrabs and egg Cups for eggs. These products are available free at the main store.

Scrabs seeds have an extra use . You can feed Fenrock with them.
Every eggs have 12 servings. To feed your Fenrock with them , all you have to do is to put them near your Fenrocks with egg cups or directly by moving them (don't forget that you can't take them directly in your inventory) . Fenrocks will eat them . When servings reach 0 , the eggs will dissepear.

It is important to note that at luc's store you can get a Bubbie HUD. When you buy items from his vendors (not affiliate vendors) you collect points which you can check using the HUD. He has several items for his breedables you can get for free using your points.

The Bubbies, also by luc and the subject of my first blog, will randomly drop food monney, worth 3 servings each, that the Scrabs can eat.  This is the best feature I find of luc's breedables; the interaction. Unless you have an army of Bubbies though, you won't get enough food monney from them to actually sustain your Scrabs, but it is an interesting side feature I haven't seen in other breedables to date.

The menu is very simple to use:

Sound, Sleep, Nothing, Name, Package are the only options.

Sound will toggle the sound off or on. Sleep puts them to sleep, or wakes them up which is essential after activating via the home object.  I toggled sleep to take the photos but it didn't seem to work so it took me a while to take the pictures I needed. Annoying, especially if you are adding new Scrabs to your pack since they all have to be near the home object when you touch it to activate the new ones.  If they are far away they may end up setting a home point that is outside the range of the food which should always be rezzed near the home object.

Nothing closes the menu. Name allows you to rename your Scrab using the format "name, Steve" without the quotation marks.  Package allows you to crate your live Scrab so you can take it into inventory or sell it safely. Just picking up any of these RBG breedables will cause them to break so be warned.

After my last post I was asked what the script time was for these breedables so I will put the three I have reviewed here so far.  These are the highest script time dilations I found in checking my estate tool:

Fenrock - 0.016
Scrab - 0.014
Bubbie - 0.013

As you can see, they have a very quick script time and will cause negligible server side lag.

I give this breedable 3 out of 5 stars as it's RBG based, doesn't allow for bonding (I'd have to completely separate a male and a female from the rest) and it doesn't show who the parents of the egg are. The upside is the interaction with luc's other breedables.

Fenrocks

 Introducing....the Fenrock!

Directly from the full starter pack information:

About the Fenrock starter pack (full)
----------------------------------------------------------

The starter pack (full) comes with 9 eggss, 1 of each possible combination of Red, Blue and Green and is ideal for those who want to start breeding for particular combinations. A Fenrock home rock is also included incase you don't already have one and 2 Large gravel food bowls .

To hatch your eggs, simply place them on the ground within range of an Fenrock home, then click the egg cup and select "unpackage". Once the egg is unpackaged, click the seed and select "Hatch" this will rez your Fenrock, and you can now sit back and watch it .

You should also have some food out, although he won't be hungry until 4 hours after he is born.

About the Fenrock home rock
----------------------------------------------------------

The Home object is what Fenrocks use to judge how far they are allowed to roam from. To configure the distance, change the description of the home rock . The home rock is modifiable, but it is not recommended to change it's size greater than 1-2 meters in height (fenrocks can't fly.)

Clicking the fenrock home rock will update all Scrabs in range with a new home position. You need to click the fenrock home everytime you hatch an egg or unbox an fenrock.

The Fenrock home covers a square area of land, allowing for traditional cages, the distance is calculated by using a maximum y and maximum x coordinate, this means that when an orch is in the corner of its roam distance, it will be further than the allowed distance from the Fenrock home .

An easy way to determine what your home distance should be, is to rez a large square covering the area you want, then divide the width by 2. So a 10x10 meter pen would require a distance of 5 in the home object. The home object should be placed in the center (on the ground).

extra use : Fenrock can eat scrabs eggs ;)

If you read the post on Bubbies, you will recognize the Fenrock as one of luc Walmer's breedables. This is another of his that interacts with a breedable he created, namely the Scrab which I will talk about in the next post.

Yes, again, this is a RBG based breedable, meaning the defining features of it are based on color, shine and glow.  They look like the full jackal form of Anubis, the god associated with mummification and the afterlife in Egyptian mythology. The only online reference to fenrock I could find was for the MMP Tibia. Regardless of the origin of the name, they are cute creatures.

Like all breedables, these need food to grow and reproduce. They also use a "home object" as a base point. The home objects luc uses vary in design by "species" but they all function the same way. Rez the home object, edit, set the desired distance you want your Fenrocks to wander in the description line and close the edit dialogue. You can then rez the food near the home object. Now you are ready to put out the Fenrocks; either the boxed lives or eggs. Lives you need to unpack, eggs you need to unpack then hatch.

The downside of the Fenrocks is, just as with the Bubbies, the need for a home object. If you ever want to add a Fenrock, ensure all your current Fenrocks are close to the home object again when you touch it to activate the new ones you are adding. If not, their home point will be where they are at and they may end up being out of range of their food. Since these do not have a sleep function, that makes adding new Fenrock tricky. Although they do not move quickly, they do move and if you have several, keeping them contained near the home object to activate newly added Fenrock can be a task.

You need to package your Fenrock and their eggs for transport or sale.  This will also take place with any updates the creator does. It can be time consuming if you have several Fenrock or similarly scripted breedables. Unlike some other breedables that you can use an update totem on and update several at once, namely the Ozimals bunnies.

luc has created his breedables to only get glow and shine at later generations. The generations are determined by the female. If your females are all Gen: 0 then all their offspring will be Gen: 1. All Gen: 1 females will produce Gen: 2 and so on. Once you get to Gen: 3 and Gen: 4 you will start to "unlock" glow and shine for luc's breedables.

This breedable also come with a sex change device. Since the genders are random when you unpackage or hatch, this is handy if you find you have too many of one gender versus another. Just package in the sex change prim like you would a crate and allow it to do it's work.

The menu on the Fenrock differs from the Bubbies:

As you can see there are fewer options. Sound, Nothing, Name, Package

These are explained in the previous post for the Bubbies. The Name feature is the same as the Bubbies, meaning you type in open chat the format "name, YOUR NAME HERE" without the quotation marks.

The sound for the Fenrock reminds me of the Egyptian word for dog which is "iwiw". It's a rather higher pitched echoing sound.

Just as a note, I turn all sound off for all my breedables as I have so many in a small area it wouldn't sound very good with the mixture, although it should be noted, none of the breedables I've found with this same scripting have sounds that carry very far so it is possible to have them far enough apart you can wander from one group to another without much overlap of sound.

The Fenrock I chose to feature in these photos is a "special". He was a free gift and already has shine as seen in the photos, but he also poofs a texture of the word "LOVE" when touched and has an added comment you can read in open chat.

I haven't seen this yet with luc's other breedables, but the Grouse, created by Cog Zeplin, which uses the same scripting, and that I will talk about in a later post, have several "specials" including many exclusive ones Cog made individually for customers like me.

NOTE: For some reason, the Fenrock and accessories are not included in the affiliate vendor. I hope this changes as it expands your sales opportunities if people want to take full advantage of luc's interacting breedables as well as allows you to purchase food (no 10% rebate, but you are allowed to buy through the vendor for his other breedables) without tp'ing all over.

Pricing:

Fenrock Starter Pack Full L$ 500 (includes 9 eggs, 2 large gravel bowls, 1 home rock, 2 sex changer)
Fenrock Food Pack Medium L$ 100 (3 medium gravel food bowls - 84 servings each)
Fenrock Food Pack Large L$ 200 (3 large gravel bowls - 168 servings each)
Fenrock Starter Pack Medium L$ 300 (4 eggs, 2 medium gravel bowls, 1 home object, 1 sex changer)

Fenrock Boxes (to allow you to take lives to inventory)
Fenrock egg cups (to allow you to take eggs to inventory)
1 Special Fenrock
2 Fenrock Fast grow (to speed them to mature age for faster breeding)

I give this breedable 3 out of 5 stars as it's RBG based, doesn't allow for bonding (I'd have to completely separate a male and a female from the rest) and it doesn't show who the parents of the egg are. The upside is the interaction with luc's other breedables, specials, the sex change option and that, personally, I really like the Anubis look.

Bubbies

Directly from the notecard:

About the Bubbie
----------------------------------------------------------

To hatch your eggs, simply place them on the ground within range of a Bubbie home planet, then click the egg cup and select "unpackage". Once the egg is unpackaged, click the egg and select "Hatch" this will rez your Bubbie, and you can now sit back and watch it .

You should also have some food out, although he won't be hungry until 4 hours after he is born.

About the Bubbie home planet
----------------------------------------------------------

The Home object is what Bubbies use to judge how far they are allowed to roam from. To configure the distance, change the description of the home planet . The home planet is modifiable, but it is not recommended to change it's size greater than 1-2 meters in height (Bubbies can't fly.)

Clicking the Home planet will update all Bubbies in range with a new home position. You need to click the Home planet everytime you hatch an egg or unbox a Bubbie.

The home planet covers a square area of land, allowing for traditional cages, the distance is calculated by using a maximum y and maximum x coordinate, this means that when a Bubbie is in the corner of its roam distance, it will be further than the allowed distance from the home planet.

An easy way to determine what your home distance should be, is to rez a large square covering the area you want, then divide the width by 2. So a 10x10 meter pen would require a distance of 5 in the home object. The home object should be placed in the center (on the ground).

Live Bubbies and eggs must never be taken into your inventory. Doing so will break them, so in order to take them into your inventory, you should use Bubbie box for bubbies and Egg Cups for eggs. These products are available free at the main store.

Bubbies will sometime loose monney on the ground .
Don't delete them. You can keep them in directly in your inventory. They will be usefull for the futurs features coming very soon ^^ They will be able to feed scrabs :)

 Okay, so what's a Bubbie?

Well, that's a Bubbie! A round little creature, I'm presuming from another planet as I have yet to see one on Earth. :p They are a walking bubble, with ears and eyes and make an odd noise; kind of like you're running your thumb across a balloon crossed with a whale. While it's not the most relaxing noise, it's not the loudest (or worst).

The Bubbies are RBG based breedables, meaning the only choices you get are based on the color wheel. Red, green, blue, yellow, orange and so on. There can be glow and shine but other than the coloring of the prims, there is no texturing. Other than the eyes and... erm.... beak (?) ... the rest of the Bubbie will mix and match colors based on parentage. You do not bond Bubbies, they breed on their own and the "eggs" you get from them do not show the parents.

This breedable needs a "home" object. The drawback to this is that any time you want to add a Bubbie to your breeders you need to use the menu to make them sleep, edit them (do NOT pick up without packing), and drag them close to the home object. Once your new Bubbie is out, you touch the home object to activate it. Therefore, if you don't move your original Bubbies back near the home object, the spot they are at when the home object is touched becomes their home and they may end up being out of range of their food.

The Bubbies and their eggs need to be packed in the appropriate boxes before you can pick them up. To just take them without packaging will break them.

Pricing:

4 small bubble gum food pack L$ 100 (42 servings each)
4 medium bubble gum food pack L$ 200 (84 servings each)
Bubbie Starter Pack (medium) L$ 300 (4 eggs and 2 small bubble gum food)
Bubbie Starter Pack (full) L$ 500 (9 eggs and 2 medium bubble gum food)

You can also pick up an affiliate vendor, that you can use to purchase supplies from AND make 10% of sales. This is helpful if you're someone like me who has a lot of breedables and really doesn't like TP'ing all over the grid to get food or egg cups or crates here and there.

luc Walmer, the creator, also has all his breedables in the same vendor so you can easily start with one and expand to his others without having to hunt them down again.

What I really like about luc's products is that they are interactive in that you can use the "seeds" from one to feed another kind as you can see from the last line in the above instructions. Clever in that it makes you want to use all his breedables so you can get the full fun of breeding them.

The menu is very straightforward; Sound, Sleep, HUD, Nothing, Name, Package.

Sound toggles it on or off.
Sleep wakes them up after you set their home position, a must if you don't want them to starve. It puts them to sleep so you can drag them closer to the home object if you are adding a Bubbie to your brood. They do move around and the distance is based on the number you set in the description line of the home object before touching it.
HUD Well this is just downright smart. I can wear the HUD to get egg and live crates! No, it's not like the turtle HUDs, this is just for accessories you need to package your Bubbies.
Nothing closes the menu.
Name allows you to name your Bubbie via open chat. You need to type name, WHATEVER YOU WANT, for example name, Bobby Bubbie. Retouching the Bubbie will show the name change in hover text.
Package allows you to package your Bubbie or egg into a crate so you can pick it up and sell it or give it away or move it to another location.

To see Bubbies you can go to luc's location: Bubbie World Shop
or at my Neverland Breedables Ranch

I give this breedable 3 out of 5 stars as it's RBG based, doesn't allow for bonding (I'd have to completely separate a male and a female from the rest) and it doesn't show who the parents of the egg are. The upside is the HUD and the interaction with luc's other breedables.

Getting started...

The best way to start a blog is at the beginning, so I will start by telling you how I got involved with breedables in Secondlife.  If you are unfamiliar with Secondlife, or Second Life, or SL, it's an online virtual world where you create an avatar. The avatars can be in human form or any other form you can create, find or buy from other residents in SL.  The currency is L$ (Lindens) and can be bought and sold for USD. Inside of SL, you can make, buy, sell, create, upload and download textures, make friends, communicate, live and, as to the point of this blog... raise breedables.

I say breedables and not breedable pets for a specific reason, some aren't what you'd consider to be pets, like breedable flowers for example.

I got my first taste of breedables in February of 2010 with the Ozimals bunnies. They are an 11 prim scripted "pet" that you have to feed and breed to produce "nests" which you then birth to get more bunnies.

I adopted a Secondlife child (real age 29, SL age 5 to 9 depending on what she feels like). She came into my life with some of the Ozimals bunnies. She gave one to me and told me to hold it. I attached it, wore it, and was able to "pet" it. I fell in love instantly.  This set me off on a path of owning several hundred of these creatures, creating hundreds of nests for me. Along the way I quickly realized that there was no pedigree system for them so I came up with slbreedablepets.com. Currently the only true pedigree registry and lineage tracker in SL.

At the time, only the Sion Chickens had seen any sort of popularity, but the Ozimals bunnies took SL by storm. Best estimates, at the height of their popularity, put approximately 3000 +/- breeders and over a million live bunnies on the grid. Not counting unbirthed nests.

I will get more into the Ozimals bunnies later on in this blog, but for now, that is how I started on my path to being entranced with and dedicated to virtual breedables in SL.

Upcoming posts will be reviews on various breedables I have encountered in Secondlife including Orchs, Scrabs, Ravens, Grouse, HB Bunnies (not to be confused with Ozimals bunnies), Lizards and more!

CREATORS:  If you have created a breedable in SL and you want it to be posted here, please contact Andromeda Felisimo inworld. I do not accept payment for posts but I'd prefer to be given a sample so I can test it myself and give a complete review. That said, I have purchased the starter kits and will designate which breedables I have purchased myself and which were given to me for review.

READERS:  I will, to the best of my ability, include any costs associated with each of the breedables I write about here so you can make an informed decision. As well, I will be openly honest about how I feel about each breedable. Good, bad or otherwise, it's your money you are spending and you deserve to know.
